Hi All,
It’s February and time for another food service/meal prep day with the help of Feeding GA Families. This month we are celebrating my heritage by focusing on Italian cuisine. When you think of Italian food, you think of heaping plates of pasta, tangy sauces, delicious meats, and warm, stringy cheese. And lots of it! That’s what abbondanza is all about. It means abundance in Italian but it’s more than a description, it’s a big part of Italian culture.
Obviously, Italian cuisine holds a special place in my heart. Growing up in New Jersey in the 70’s, our lives revolved around eating. We had Italian food most nights, or as we called it back then, food. Leftovers crammed the fridge and the freezer. Often, my afternoon snack was dunking a piece of crusty bread into a pot of meatballs and “gravy”. And when we decided to give my mom a break from cooking… we ordered pizza!
Most of all, Italian cuisine makes me think of food prepared with time-honored recipes, carefully chosen ingredients, and a ton of love. This month we are asking you to put some TLC into the Italian meal of your choice. It doesn’t have to be fancy but your efforts will make a difference in the lives of a food insecure family.
Ok, enough schmaltz. What kinds of food are we looking for?
– Any type/shape of pasta
– Meatballs and/or italian sausage
– Any sauce (marinara, vodka “pink sauce”, pesto, bolognese)
– Any chicken or meat dish
Please note that anything with bread or rolls will most likely get soggy so try to avoid meatball sandwiches, and items like garlic bread may get stale by time they are delivered.
I’m going to collect meals next Saturday and Sunday. (2/11-12) If you are interested in cooking, please let me know. And if you want to come to our house to drink some wine and listen to Dean Martin while we cook, YOU ARE WELCOME!
I know we are all busy but feeding Atlanta’s food insecure is important. These are our neighbors, friends and coworkers. These are kids in your children’s classes. The person who makes your coffee, takes your order, or delivers your packages. Please find it in your heart to help this month.
I want to deliver hundreds of meals to Feeding GA Families and when I see the shocked look on their faces, I’m gonna shout … ABBONDANZA!
