Hi All,
First off, 190 delicious homemade Italian meals were delivered in February!!!! Thank you to everyone who cooked, provided supplies, or donated money. Special thanks to Stephie and Cody Purcell who came to the house and helped cook. Baby Declan didn’t do much except sit there and look cute as hell!
On to March 24-26
This month we turn our attention to our favorite meals. Meals that transport you to another time, to another place. Meals you consider a decadent treat. Meals you get excited to make for your family. They can be simple or complex. Basic or fancy. The key is that you LOVE making them and take special care in the process.
I once made a deconstructed beef stroganoff for Amy. It was during the lockdown but it our anniversary and I wanted to do something special. We lived in a tiny second floor apartment in Decatur and I was determined to destroy our little kitchen and make something amazing! (I use every pot and pan we have making a PB&J!)
I started as I always do with some mood music. Dean Martin’s voice on vinyl warms my old Italian heart. I created my base out of fresh egg noodles- the kind that only take 2-3 min to cook. Love those! Then I sauteed portabella mushrooms in red wine and balsamic vinegar until they were like candy. Next I carmelized some sweet onions. I layered the mushrooms and onions over the noodles. By now our little apartment smelled delicious or was it the rest of the red wine and the Dino?
Next I cut thin slices of medium rare steak that I cooked “hobo style” in a frying pan, and laid those across the top. Finally, I topped the dish with homemade cream of mushroom soup. We set our little card table in the middle of the room and lit some candles. It was an event! I only made it that one time but Amy and I still talk about it. I want to make it again!
Hopefully that has inspired you to think back and find a meal that motivates you.
Let us know how you can support the cause. These meals can literally change someone’s life. Help us fill their bellies and their hearts at the same time. We can’t feed Atlanta without you!!!
